Application Of Chinese Elements In Watches
In recent years Chinese elements have been prevalently applied in the fashion industry. Known as Chinoiseries, the garment, handbag, music and other fashion items throughout the world is incorporated into a bit of Chinese elements. Now Chinese style is brought into the design by watch designers. Now, let’s look at Chinese elements in watches.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch is considered as the pride of China. It pays homage to one of the world’s greatest wonders – The Great Wall. This timepiece displays a stunning infusion of stainless steel and 18-karat pink gold. The most recognizable features of the watch lies in the well known octagonal bezel together with the winding crown and two rows of vertically oriented links in the bracelet. The hexagonal bezel screws are crafted from white gold, with slots aligning to form a circle. The moon phases indicators are presented by a silvered dial with a “grand tapisserie” central motif. The power reserve is placed in the upper hemisphere, while the circular pointer-type date display is positioned at 6 o’clock. The caseback which depicts the Great Wall if intricately engraved with the characters “Royal Oak Pride of China Limited Edition”.
The self-winding 3123 caliber which is an upgraded version of Audemars Piguet’s manufacture 3120 caliber is also animating the Royal Oak Pride of China. With a power reserve of about 60 hours and a freely-sprung variation inertia balance alternates 21,600 times each hour, it comes with high performance and faithful accuracy. Apart from the date, moon phase and power reserve indicator, the 3123 caliber also provides a sweep seconds function. Crafted from 22 karat gold, the massive, central rotor winds the mainspring in both its directions of rotation.
The limited edtion of “les Dragon” watches from Vacheron Constantin also boast the features of Chinese elements. There are only nine pieces manufactured for each of the three watch models. The designs are all hand-made, and they are the quintessence of the bare hands of talented artisans. The three Dragons watch design comes with a different Chinese style dragon image. The engraving of a guilloche pattern on the watch face makes the watch more interesting.
