House Extension Ideas in London

Visit the Royal Institute of British Architects Bookshop at 66 Portland Place (itself an inspiring building) in the West End to browse its excellent selection of books, many of which are devoted to the most successful examples of domestic alterations in the UK and abroad.

Look at the work of successful architects to define your own tastes and preferences. Are you excited by the rich materiality of Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto, or do you adore the exposed concrete of Tadao Ando? Perhaps you admire the high tech glass and steel of Richard Rogers or prefer the playfulness of Enric Miralles? 

Look at the websites of architectural practices in London to see what is achievable and acceptable within the local authority guidelines. It is likely that you will find an extension to a home similar to your own, in one of their online portfolios.

Visit private residential properties in the London Open House event (held in June each year) to see what is possible to achieve with adventurous modern design (http://www.londonopenhouse.org/). The owners of the house are normally available if you wish to obtain more information: find out which architect they used, how satisfied they are and any pitfalls to avoid.

Talk to architects and designers, some will offer you a free consultation at your house to suggest ideas and sketch possible designs. The Royal Institute of British Architects runs a project called ‘Architect in the House’ each April, where an Architect will give an hour long consultation on site in exchange for a suggested £40 donation to charity. This is a great way to engage the help of a professional and discuss your proposals.

Photocopy and print everything that you are inspired by in books, magazines and the Internet. Keep a scrapbook to show to your architect and convey your tastes. He will undoubtedly have many new ideas to combine with yours to create something individually catered that perhaps you had not previously imagined.

The ideas presented here suggest just some of the possibilities for engaging your own creativity to imagine the possibilities for your house. Ando Foro $15.98 Budapest-based Romano Drom is from the Olah Romany people, who lived in Romania until the middle of the 19th century, before migrating to Hungary. Their musical heritage is decidedly vocal, since the only instruments used by the Olah were percussive, consisting of churns, spoons -- anything but specific instruments. It's only in the last 40 years that the adventurous young Olah have taken up real instruments, and the result is the music of this band, who in many ways seem to have more in common with the guitar-based flamenco music of their Spanish cousins than most Central European gypsies. Bandleader Anti is powerful on the fretboard, and the others (including accordion, bass, percussion, and butter churn players) back him up well on this set of traditional music. While they've updated their heritage, they haven't abandoned it by any means -- the vocals, and the interplay between voices (although real instruments have largely replaced voices imitating instruments), remain the same. The seven-piece certainly doesn't sound like anyone else, and there's a touching beauty about some of their material, while other songs drive hard. Kicking things off with a bang, the boisterous title cut is one of the more traditional numbers here, as the slick and innovative arrangements begin with the following, over-the-top song “Extráñame.” From there to the giddy closer, “Me Gusta Me Gusta,” the album is filled with life, humor, and slick songs of romance, plus plenty of those playful music tricks that alienate the banda purists.
