It’s a well known fact that gold is used since the prehistoric times. Today scientists even say that the first metal used in various rituals might have been gold. It was also thought to be an indication of status and wealth in Ancient Egypt about 2600 BC. During the whole history Egypt as well as Nubia has been the main gold-producing country in the world. There is an old geology map of a Nubia’s gold mine that is thought to be the earliest known map ever. Gold is also mentioned in Holy Bible as an important metal for the ancient world humanity. Due to the fact that Indians were using gold ornamentation and jewellery, the early America explorers continued their discovering New World.

South Africa has become the biggest world’s gold supplying source since the 1880s. More than a half of all the gold ever produced, came to us from that region. By 1970 South Africa was producing about one thousand tons of gold which is more than seventy percent of world’s total gold production. After thirty years have passed those figures have become much smaller – two thousand and seventy two tons. That was caused by the growing difficulty of gold extraction. Today the biggest gold producer is China with its two thousand and seventy six tons. Among the other gold producers the biggest ones are Peru, Russia, Australia and the United States. There are controversial gold mining projects located Atacama Desert’s mountains nearby the Argentina-Chile border in South America. Nowadays, a small scale mining has become the most popular, giving more than one-quarter of the total gold output. By now the total amount of gold that’s ever mined is about two hundred and sixty thousand tones. A twenty meters long cube could be built by putting all that gold together.

Now, let’s go talk about physical attributes of that precious metal. The gold’s atomic number is seventy nine and it is symbolized as Au in the periodic table. Originally gold comes to us as nuggets or alluvial deposits, veins, rocks grains. Yellow coloring is the main gold’s attribute in its pure form. Also it has an attractive shining that remains after contacting with oxygen present in water and air. It means gold has an excellent oxidative corrosion resistance.

Being one of the most flexible metals gold can be compressed into a three hundred square feet sheet which is about one square meter. It could be also be translucent if is compressed thin enough. As the gold reflects the red and yellow colors the light that is coming through the transparent metal sheet is going to be blue colored with a little green gradation. Reflecting the infrared lights semi-transparent sheets of gold are used as infrared shields in spacesuits’ or heat-resistant suits visors. Gild is also electrical conductor.
