The highlands are fertile, and many Gusii are employed in the agricultural sector, growing tea, coffee and sweet bananas. The Gusii are recognized widely for their skill at carving soapstone, and several families in the region earn supplemental income from the sale of their stone art. Mining the stone is the most arduous part of the process. Men use large machete-style knives called pangas to divide chunks of the stone away from the main vein and to portion off appropriately sized pieces for carving. The finer carving is accomplished with a small knife called a kisu, and then the carvings are washed down in a slurry of sand and water to fully smooth the surfaces in preparation for dyeing. At the Ndima finishing shop near Nairobi, roughly a dozen artisans of varied ethnicity bring the stone carvings to life using non-toxic synthetic dyes. This vase is a modern take on an actual 3100-year-old handmade Chinese vase that was found at the bottom of the sea in the wreck of an old Chinese jonk.
