Chinese Porcelain

China and the Porcelain Teapot

China and the porcelain teapot have a unique history. It is believed that the Chinese probably made the first true porcelain during the Tang dynasty (618-907). Their special techniques for combining the proper ingredients and firing the mixture at extremely high temperatures gradually developed into the worldwide manufacturing of stoneware.

White porcelain first appeared in the late North Dynasty in the North China. This laid a foundation for decorative porcelain with successful firing of white porcelain, from which china and the porcelain teapot came about.

During the Song dynasty (960-1279), Chinese emperors established royal factories to produce porcelain for their palaces. Since the 1300's, most Chinese porcelain has been made in the city of Jingdezhen. Painting over the glaze with enamel colors also became a popular decorating technique during this time, which has given us the unique and beautiful selections of Chinese porcelain teapots that we see today.

Hard-paste porcelain has always been preferred and considered the better choice among porcelain makers. This type of porcelain was first developed from petuntse and kaolin by the Chinese. Hard-paste porcelain is said to resist melting better than other types of porcelain. For this reason, it can be fired at higher temperatures, making them beautiful, yet sturdy enough to last a lifetime.

Whether you want a porcelain teapot as a collector’s piece or you want to enjoy your favorite tea in luxury, you can find a variety of teapot selections right online. Unfortunately the number of skilled potters is decreasing and eventually Chinese porcelain pieces as we know it will no longer be created. If you want a piece of history before it all comes to an end, you’d better get yours now.
