What Exactly is Pewter in Pewter Belt Buckles
Pewter is an alloy of antimony, copper and tin, with the greatest component being tin. Today, pewter is composed of at least 91% tin with small amounts of antimony and/or bismuth and copper added to give it strength and color. Old pewter and lower grades of pewter contain lead and are susceptible to rust and tarnish. These pieces, containing lead, should not come in contact with food or drink. Lead poisoning death could result.
Pewter is considered to be the world’s fourth most precious metal after platinum, gold and silver. It dates back to Roman days and was only affordable by the rich and wealthy of the day. Its prized value is determined by its beauty and unique characteristics. Being lead-free, modern pewter is resistant to rust, tarnish or deterioration in any way, allowing it to withstand time while maintaining its distinctive appearance and substance. These qualities found in pewter belt buckles make them specially appreciated and highly collectible.
The word “pewter” is probably a variation of the word “spelter.” This became “peautre” in French, as well as many other languages. Today, pewter is mainly used in decorative objects, namely collectible statuettes and figurines, replica coins, belt buckles and accessories.
Modern-day pewter that is made in the United States does not contain lead and, therefore, does not tarnish. Unlike silver, pewter does not require special care or regular polishing. Simply keeping it clean is all that is really required. Pewter does, however, have a tendency to oxidize over a long time, giving it an antique look with its grayish color or “patina”. And it is this patina that may eventually enhance the value of this highly collectible and beautiful metal in pewter belt buckles.
